CT Scan

This test involves a patient lying still while X-rays are taken from all angles. These X-rays are used to build up a 3d picture of the patient's internal organs. Typically contrast materials (materials which show up well on X-rays) are injected, swallowed, or both. This means that areas of inflammation are easier to see.

  • Better resolution than other non-invasive tests such as ultrasound

  • Numerous X-rays carry a risk of cancer
  • It cannot be performed on a pregnant lady due to risk to the foetus
  • The patient must remain still to get good images
  • You cannot monitor processes in real time, only as a series of stills
  • If inflammation is found, more invasive procedures such as colonoscopy must be performed to determine the cause
