Ferrous Sulfate

This is an iron containing compound used to treat iron deficiency anaemia. It is usually taken in tablet form. Your doctor will advise on the correct dosage, as it depends on the severity of the deficiency.

People with an IBD should not take these tablets without consulting their doctor first.

The tablets should be taken with water, and not at the same time as coffee, milk, wholegrain or eggs as this can decrease the absorption. Meat and vitamin C can increase the absorption.

Side effects

  • Constipation
  • Blackened stools
  • Rarely an allergic reaction can occur
