This stands for LOw Fat, Fibre Limited EXclusion diet. It is a short cut to an elimination diet, and often follows on from one of the liquid diets. Basically, following successful treatment of symptoms, the patient follows a diet of bland foods which very rarely cause problems in patients with Crohn’s disease, for a couple of weeks. Gradually foods are introduced (one new food every couple of days) and eaten in large quantities, so that if there is a reaction it becomes obvious. If a reaction does occur, it is noted, the food is removed and no more new foods are added until the reaction has died down. After the diet is completed, suspect foods are retested to check if the reaction was a true reaction or just a coincidence. Foods which cause a reaction the second time are excluded from the diet. The finished diet is then checked to ensure it is complete, and any deficiencies rectified with supplements.

As always, consult your doctor or dietician before making any major changes to your diet.
