Scleroderma

Scleroderma

Scleroderma is an autoimmune disease of the connective tissues and causes abnormal deposits of Collagen protein under the skin.

There are two types of Scleroderma: Limited Scleroderma (CREST Syndrome), and Diffuse Scleroderma. Scleroderma can affect the skin, joints, muscles, lungs, blood vessels, and GI Tract.

Scleroderma can cause the skin to become abnormally hard and may result in immobility, skin may become discolored, or produce ulcers (sores), or white lumps under the skin. Reactions of the skin (and blood vessels) such as Raynaudís Phenomenon can occur as well.

Scleroderma can be painful or cause numbness in affected areas.

The joints may become stiff, swollen and painful. Scleroderma can affect the GI Tract motility and nutritional absorbtion and can affect lung function due to fibrotic tissue buildup in the lungs.

Other autoimmune diseases can occur with Scleroderma as well. Mixed Connective Tissue Disease may be diagnosed if Scleroderma occurs with other autoimmune diseases such as SLE (Systemic Lupus Erythematosus) and Polymyositis (autoimmune disease of skeletal muscle).
