Total Iron Binding Capacity

Total iron-binding capacity (TIBC) is a lab test conducted to determine the blood's capacity to bind iron with transferrin.

In people with Crohn's Disease or other IBD, those who have high TIBC and signs of anemia probably have Iron Deficiency Anemia. However, if someone has IBD, shows signs of anemia, and has low or normal TIBC, then they should also be evaluated for Anemia of Chronic Disease.
